A front door is a critical piece to every persons home. They are one of the first pieces of your home that guests will see and should be made to look their best. If you find yourself growing bored of the old front door or if you simply want a change of pace, you might want to consider one of the following door styles for your house. Let’s take a look.
The Wooden Front Door
A wooden front door is a very common sight. They can be both beautiful and versatile. These doors can be made from a variety of woods including cherry, oak, walnut, mahogany and maple. These doors will look great and can offer an elegant touch to your home.
Wooden front doors can be either a solid wood or veneer panels over a wooden core. It is important that you keep this in mind when shopping for your door. A solid wood front door will cost far more than the veneer variants, however, there is nothing wrong with a veneer-style front door, just be sure to check the thickness of the veneer panels. If they are too thin, the door will be more susceptible to damage and this can be costly.
The Steel Front Door
A steel front door will be an excellent choice if you are looking for a sturdy and secure door. These front doors are much stronger than the wooden variants and are not susceptible to warping. Dents and dings can be easily repaired by using automobile repair kits. A steel door is also cheap to implement. Typically, they will cost less than any other material used for a front door. It is important to remember, with any material used, if you choose to include sidelights or premium hardware, even the doors which are made of cheaper materials can be quite expensive.
Most steel doors will have a polyester finish which will require painting on occasion. However, there are premium varieties which will come with a vinyl coating. This will give the front door better resistance to the weather.
The Aluminum Front Door
An aluminum front door has an insulation core which is placed inside of a metal coat. Aluminum doors will be custom built to your doorway. An aluminum front door can come in a variety of colors and styles and wood-grain finishes are not an uncommon sight.
An aluminum front door comes with an enamel finish which means it will never rust and will never need a new paint job. Because these doors are custom, it is easy to match them to an existing storm door. Keep in mind, however, next to solid wood these doors can be the most expensive option. This is because of the custom fitting and the other perks that come along with this style of door.
The Fiberglass-Composite Front Door
A fiberglass-composite front door is strong and will require very little maintenance. These doors can be an excellent choice if you live in an area with rough climates. A door of this type can be made to look just like wood and through a staining process can be made to match the color of oak, cherry, walnut and a number of other wood types.
A fiberglass-composite door is also an affordable option. While they will typically be more expensive than a steel door, they are cheaper than aluminum or wooden variants. However, as stated before, if you choose to include sidelights or other hardware, these doors can be quite expensive, too.
So, as you can see, there are a large number of options to choose from for a brand new front door. Keep in mind that the materials used in the construction will dictate the cost of your new door. However, as this is the entrance way to your home, it is important that you pick something that you will be happy with for years to come.
